Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Your Facility
Needs to Know

From getting started to understanding how the NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ and NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™ work — answers to the questions we hear most from healthcare facilities.

Getting Started

+

How does a facility get started with BDL?

Getting started is straightforward. Contact us by phone at (800) 897-1773 or through our website contact form. We will walk your team through the onboarding process, which includes setting up your account in our Laboratory Information System, coordinating logistics for specimen pickup, and providing collection supplies and requisition materials. Most facilities are fully onboarded and sending specimens within days.

+

Is there a minimum volume requirement to work with BDL?

No. BDL works with facilities of all sizes, from single-location wound care clinics to multi-site health systems. Every facility receives the same level of service, the same turnaround times, and the same NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ and NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™ monitoring regardless of volume.

+

What does BDL provide to our facility for specimen collection?

BDL provides all necessary collection supplies, including specimen collection kits, transport media, requisition forms, pre-printed shipping labels, and temperature-monitored packaging. Your staff collects the specimen according to standard clinical procedure — we handle everything from pickup forward.

+

Do we need to change our current workflows to use BDL?

No. BDL is designed to fit into your existing clinical workflow, not replace it. Your physicians continue to order the tests they determine are clinically necessary. Your nursing staff collects specimens the same way they do now. The only change is faster, more reliable results and a team that monitors every specimen from pickup to processing.

Turnaround & Results

+

How fast will we receive results?

BDL delivers PCR test results the same day we receive the specimen at our laboratory.

+

How are results delivered to our facility?

Results are delivered exclusively through BDL's secure, HIPAA-compliant electronic LIS portal. Your facility receives login credentials during onboarding and can access results as soon as they are released. All results are released exclusively by California-licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientists.

+

What if we need to reach BDL after hours about a result?

A real person answers the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ team operates around the clock monitoring all shipments and laboratory processing. For urgent clinical matters, our team can reach the medical director directly at any hour. You will never get a voicemail or an answering service.

The NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ and NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™

+

What is the NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ and NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™?

The NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ is BDL's proprietary overnight logistics and monitoring system. NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™ is BDL's specimen integrity verification system, powered by a proprietary high technology sensor on every shipment. It was originally built during the COVID crisis to deliver same-day results to homeless shelters and domestic violence facilities. Today, it is the standard operating procedure for every BDL client.

The protocol includes 24-hour shipment monitoring by a dedicated overnight team, temperature tracking on every specimen so we know if it hits 77 degrees at any point during transit, hourly accountability for every specimen from pickup to processing, and PCR results the same day we receive the specimen.

+

How does BDL monitor specimen temperature during shipping?

Every specimen shipped to our lab includes a proprietary high technology sensor, the device behind NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™. This compact sensor is placed inside every specimen container and monitors temperature throughout transport. If the sample ever reaches 77°F, the sensor records the cumulative duration of all breaches, giving our laboratory team measurable, visual proof of exactly how long specimen integrity was compromised.

NIGHTHAWK
VERIFY™
Specimen Temperature Monitoring
NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™

The temperature of every specimen tracked from your facility to our lab. We know if it ever reached 77°F. and for how long.

When the specimen arrives at our lab, we know before testing begins. No guesswork. No assumptions.

If a temperature excursion is detected, the sample is flagged and your facility is immediately notified.

+

What happens if a shipment is delayed or a package goes off-route?

BDL's overnight team monitors 100% of shipments in real time. Every specimen is accounted for hourly from the moment it is picked up. If a shipment is delayed, rerouted, or shows any irregularity, the team intervenes immediately. Tracked all night. Every package. Every time.

+

When are specimens picked up from our facility?

Samples are picked up by 2 pm local time. Once collected, the NIGHTHAWK PROTOCOL™ and NIGHTHAWK VERIFY™ take over — monitoring the shipment, verifying temperature integrity, and processing the sample. Results are delivered the same day we receive the specimen at our laboratory.

Testing & Services

+

What types of testing does BDL offer?

BDL specializes in PCR-based molecular diagnostics. Our primary testing panels include Wound Care PCR, Respiratory PCR, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) PCR, and Genitourinary (GU) Infection PCR. Each test provides rapid pathogen identification with resistance gene reporting, giving physicians the data they need to prescribe targeted treatment.

+

Does BDL offer panel-based testing?

BDL does not offer, market, or bill bundled panel services. Each organism is ordered individually by the treating physician based on patient-specific clinical factors, and each is billed under its own CPT code. This analyte-specific approach ensures that every test ordered is clinically necessary and properly documented.

+

How does BDL's testing support antibiotic stewardship?

BDL provides pathogen-specific identification with resistance gene reporting. This gives physicians the precise data they need to prescribe the right antibiotic the first time — rather than relying on broad-spectrum treatment while waiting days for traditional culture results. Fast, targeted pathogen data is exactly what CMS antibiotic stewardship requirements are designed to encourage.

+

Can BDL serve facilities outside of California?

Yes. BDL serves Skilled Nursing Facilities and healthcare providers across America. Our temperature-monitored logistics and overnight monitoring are designed specifically to support facilities in every state we serve, providing the same turnaround times and the same level of service regardless of location.

Billing & Insurance

+

How does BDL handle billing?

BDL bills the patient's insurance directly. Your facility is not billed for laboratory services. Every claim is supported by a signed physician order, documented medical necessity, valid ICD-10 coding, and a complete documentation packet that is verified before submission.

+

Does BDL accept Medicare and Medicaid?

Yes. BDL accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance. All billing is handled in full compliance with CMS requirements, including medical necessity documentation and analyte-specific CPT coding.

+

Is there any cost to the facility?

No. BDL bills the patient's insurance directly and provides all collection supplies, shipping materials, and logistics at no cost to the facility. There are no setup fees, no minimum volume commitments, and no equipment to purchase or lease.

+

Does BDL use standing orders or auto-generated test orders?

No. BDL does not accept standing orders, blanket orders, protocol-driven orders, or recurring automated orders. Every test requires an individual, patient-specific physician order with contemporaneous medical necessity documentation. This is a core part of our billing compliance framework.

Compliance & Quality

+

What certifications does BDL hold?

BDL is a CLIA-certified high-complexity laboratory (Certificate #05D2065162) with more than eleven years of continuous certification. We are also licensed by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services (License #CLF-00344480). BDL maintains compliance with CLIA, California LFS, CMS, HIPAA, HITECH, and OSHA requirements.

+

Has BDL ever had a provider complaint or lost a shipment?

No. In more than eleven years of continuous operation, BDL has maintained zero provider complaints. Every shipment is tracked all night, every package, every time.

+

Can BDL provide compliance documentation to our facility?

Yes. BDL is happy to provide compliance documentation, CLIA certification, state licensing, and Business Associate Agreements to qualified healthcare partners upon request. Contact our team directly and we will coordinate with your compliance department.

+

How does BDL help our facility with CMS survey readiness?

Fast pathogen identification strengthens your facility's infection control documentation. BDL's rapid turnaround provides documented, pathogen-specific data that supports antibiotic stewardship programs, infection control reporting, and the clinical documentation that CMS surveyors review. Having timely, accurate lab results on file demonstrates that your facility is making treatment decisions based on data — which is exactly what surveyors want to see.

+

Who performs the actual testing at BDL?

All high-complexity testing — including PCR, culture interpretation, Gram stain reading, quality control review, and result release — is performed exclusively by California-licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientists. This exceeds federal CLIA requirements and is mandated by California Laboratory Field Services for high-complexity laboratories.
